When Sister Briege McKenna visited Knock, in Ireland last year, there was a little child lying seriously ill in the Royal Victoria Hospital and his mother, a Protestant, was distraught.
The mother’s friend was a Catholic. She told the mother about Sr. Briege and how she was coming to Knock, and encouraged her to bring the little boy for Sr. Briege to pray with him. The hospital however vetoed this plan. The child was far too sick to be allowed out, much less to make the pilgrimage to Knock.
The mother then decided to go herself and to ask Sr. Briege to pray for her son. It was only when she got there that she realised that it wouldn’t be possible to speak to Sr. Briege personally as there were thousands present. That did not prevent her praying. She wasn’t familiar with the Exposition or the blessing with the Blessed Sacrament. But as Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament was being raised aloft, she found herself praying: “JESUS, IF THAT REALLY IS YOU, GRANT THAT MY LITTLE BOY WILL RECOVER.”
When she came home, there was wonderful news awaiting her. Her son was making an unexpected and spectacular recovery. She could take him home from the hospital.
