Fifteen years ago today, a nine-year-old boy named Manuel Foderà lay peacefully on his bed, tenderly holding his rosary. Mass was being celebrated in his room. With a heart full of devotion, he received Holy Communion. Moments later, echoing the final words of Jesus on the Cross—”It is finished”—Manuel passed away.
Born in Sicily, Manuel was a joyful and lively child. But when he was just four years old, he began to experience pain in his leg. Soon after, he was diagnosed with stage IV neuroblastoma, a severe form of cancer. Though doctors intervened with surgery, Manuel longed to return to his playful days with friends. The limitations placed on him deeply frustrated him—until something changed.
Instead of resisting the restrictions, Manuel embraced them. In the hospital, he would ask a religious sister to take him to the chapel so he could be near Jesus in the tabernacle. He told her, “I want to be Jesus’ best friend.” She would hold him close to the tabernacle, and they would pray the rosary together. Amazingly, Manuel would end each rosary with a litany he knew entirely by heart.
At home, he would gather his family to pray with him, saying, “The Hail Marys take the pain away.” His love for the Blessed Mother blossomed. One day, he told his mother that Our Lady had spoken to him, saying, “You are my joy.” She promised him fireworks that day—and, inexplicably, there were.
At six years old, Manuel yearned to receive the Holy Eucharist. Recognizing the depth of his desire and his medical condition, the bishop granted permission. On the day of his First Communion, Manuel awoke in unbearable pain, unable to walk. But as the time for Mass approached, the pain suddenly vanished. He said, “Our Lady told me, ‘Manuel can’t receive Jesus limping.’ So, she healed me. Thank you, Virgin Mary.”
Throughout his illness, Manuel kept a diary. In it, he wrote:
“Jesus is present in the Eucharist. He lets Himself be seen and felt in Holy Communion. Don’t believe it? Try this: close your eyes, focus, pray, and speak—Jesus will listen and speak to your heart. Don’t open your eyes too quickly, or the connection will break! Learn to be in silence, and something wonderful will happen: a bomb of grace!”
He once asked Jesus what he could offer Him. Jesus replied:
“Always show My joy to others. Be a warrior of light in the midst of darkness.”
Manuel recorded these words and added:
“Jesus gave me suffering because He needs it—joined to His own—to save the world. He called me ‘warrior of light’ to conquer the darkness and evil in the world.”
His heart burned with love for Jesus. He once asked his mother, “Are there really people who don’t love Jesus?” It was a thought he found difficult to comprehend.
Many people were touched by Manuel’s radiant peace and joy. He uplifted them in their vocations and ministries. To a bishop, he said:
“I am offering myself for you and for your priests. But I ask you one thing: please tell your priests to remind the faithful to always receive Jesus in a state of grace, without sin, and afterwards to spend at least fifteen minutes in thanksgiving. Jesus is very great! He is God and must be treated like God.”
As his suffering worsened, doctors and family encouraged him to take painkillers. His response was always simple yet profound:
“Let me wait a little longer. Jesus needs my suffering to save souls.”
In his final months, Manuel endured excruciating headaches. A scan revealed two tumors in his brain. His mother chose not to tell him. Yet days later, after receiving Communion, Manuel wept. When the priest asked why, he responded:
“I’m crying from happiness because Jesus gave me a special gift—two thorns from His Crown of Thorns. He placed them in my head.”
On his ninth birthday, Manuel told his mother:
“Jesus let me see Paradise. It’s a beautiful place, a grand banquet prepared by Him. He told me I would die at nine and that I must now suffer a little more for Him.”
And so, with a soul full of love, eyes fixed on Jesus, and a rosary in hand, this little warrior of light completed his earthly mission.
